Spirit Bears, Boundaries, and Bold Colors: Discover Sarah Seidelman's Transformative Art Journey in Ely

“It is not hyperbole to say that a spirit bear saved my life,” Sarah Seidelman reflects, her words carrying the weight of transformation and resilience. This profound connection to the natural world, combined with a fearless embrace of her inner journey, forms the foundation of her evocative art. On October 12th, Ely's Historic State Theater will host the opening of Sarah's latest exhibition, partially sponsored by Minnesota Public Radio, offering viewers an opportunity to witness the vibrant, emotional landscapes that have defined her artistic evolution.

Sarah Seidelman and her art.

Sarah’s journey into the world of art began in a moment of deep personal reflection. "I first began to paint around the time my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer," she recalls. What started as small watercolor pieces at her kitchen table soon became a source of solace and joy. "When she died in 2020, I felt a surge of permission from her, from the Universe, to spend more of my time making art." This period marked a pivotal shift in her creative process. Encouraged by online learning and the support of a growing community, Sarah's canvases grew in size and ambition. Within a few years, she secured gallery representation, hosted solo shows, and even embarked on an artist residency. Her latest venture—a 6 by 8-foot piece—represents her desire to push boundaries and embrace the thrill of creating large-scale works. "I started at age 52 and now have paintings in collections in 12 states and Canada…how crazy and awesome is that?? It’s never too late."

"Perfectionism kills so much goodness in the world. Be prolific, not perfect." - Sarah Seidelman

The evolution of Sarah's creative process is mirrored in the emotional depth and thematic boldness of her artwork. Her paintings serve as "direct transmissions" of her feelings, capturing complex emotions and experiences on canvas. One such moment came during the passing of her husband’s mother, Carolyn. "I put on some beautiful music and began to paint a large canvas in the abstract. It felt like a prayer for her life." What began as abstract brushstrokes transformed into a vivid field of lupine flowers, painted in iridescent gold to reflect the beauty and peace of the moment. "I knew, from what I felt and said during the painting, that she was going to be OK and her passage beyond this life was blessed." This emotional resonance is a hallmark of Sarah’s work, inviting viewers to witness her journey of healing and expression.

Beyond personal grief, Sarah draws inspiration from the spirits of wild animals and the natural world. Her connection to these elements began during a transformative sabbatical from her career as a physician. "It is not hyperbole to say that a spirit bear saved my life," she shares. These animal spirits, along with the lessons they embody—strength, compassion, and courage—frequently appear in her paintings. During a recent residency, a wild tiger spirit inspired her to embrace her evolving self-image and claim her power. "Some people remarked that the tigers that I painted looked sad or serious. I smiled. Of course! Tigers have big responsibilities. They are Tigers, after all." Her work not only portrays these majestic creatures but also serves as a metaphor for human resilience and authenticity.

Sarah’s vibrant colors and bold strokes are more than aesthetic choices—they are an expression of her irrepressible spirit and courageous approach to life. Diagnosed with ADHD in her 40s, Sarah describes herself as naturally exuberant. "The use of bright colors and bold marks, for me, conveys vibrancy and life." This energy is palpable in her work, which explores themes of self-expression and well-being. As a former pathologist, she was once focused on disease; now, her art seeks to understand what makes people truly alive and compassionate.

One of her most cherished pieces, "No Mistakes Cat," embodies her philosophy of embracing imperfection. "No Mistakes Cat showed up to remind me that there are no wrong turns here for me in my studio. Keep painting. Don’t stop. With each canvas, I grow!" This spirit of perseverance and self-compassion is a cornerstone of Sarah’s creative process, encouraging others to be "prolific, not perfect."

Dogs, too, hold a special place in Sarah’s heart and work. "Our dogs sustain us and also, importantly, the children. They offer their love and understanding to us when we need it most—which is all of the time." In a world that often feels chaotic, the unconditional love and presence of her canine companions provide a grounding force, reminding her of the simple, profound joys in life.

Another significant project, "Boundaries Make Love Possible," turned her life inside out last summer. This workbook, illustrated and written by Sarah, emerged from a personal journey of self-discovery. "For 100 days, I studied boundaries, applied what I learned, and made some colorful illustrations to go along with those insights." The response was overwhelming, with many people reaching out to share how the illustrations resonated with their own experiences. This project, like her art, underscores the importance of self-respect and healthy boundaries in achieving personal and creative fulfillment.

Sarah’s art is a tapestry of emotions, experiences, and visions that invite viewers to reflect on their own lives. She hopes that those who engage with her work will feel inspired to pursue their own passions. "I hope they feel love, itself, and it somehow gives them the courage to do the things that they came here to do!"

Her ability to connect deeply with others through her art was poignantly highlighted when a piece she created in memory of her mother resonated with a woman who had lost her husband. "I rushed to ship it to her so that she could have it present at his funeral, which was her heart’s desire." This moment reaffirmed for Sarah the power of art to soothe and unify, transcending personal narratives to touch universal emotions.

Sarah Seidelman’s art show promises to be a deeply moving and visually stunning experience. Whether you’re drawn by her vibrant use of color, the spiritual depth of her subjects, or the heartfelt stories behind each piece, this exhibition offers a unique opportunity to witness the transformative power of art. Join us on October 12th from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Ely's Historic State Theater for the opening reception, and explore Sarah’s extraordinary work throughout the month. Let her journey of healing and creativity inspire you to find the courage to create, to feel, and to live boldly.
