Celebrating Achievements in the Arts Community

The arts are more than entertainment—they are the heartbeat of a community. They allow individuals to express themselves, communicate ideas, and foster empathy, imagination, and belonging. At Northern Lakes Arts Association (NLAA), based in Ely and serving the greater Arrowhead region of Northeast Minnesota, we have long championed the essential role of the arts in rural life.

In communities like ours, where natural beauty meets deep-rooted resilience, the arts are not a luxury—they are a lifeline. They bring people together across generations and geographies, bridging long winters and vast distances with shared creativity. They are how we tell our stories.

That’s why NLAA is dedicated to creating access, opportunity, and recognition for artists of all ages and backgrounds. From our dynamic year-round programming to our commitment to education and community collaboration, we exist to nurture talent and celebrate achievement in every corner of our region.

Arts Achievements: A Growing Recognition

Each year, NLAA organizes and supports a wide variety of events and programs that celebrate the achievements of artists across multiple disciplines. These initiatives not only showcase exceptional talent but also foster a sense of community and cultural appreciation.

One of our flagship initiatives is the Broadway in the Boundary Waters season, a professional and community based theater experience that draws regional and national talent to our stage. These productions uplift local voices while welcoming broader artistic contributions, offering audiences transformative and inspiring live performances.

We also celebrate the visual arts through community art shows and gallery exhibitions, offering both emerging and established artists platforms to connect with the public, exhibit their work, and build their reputations. Our ArtisticELY: Arts in Action Workshops give hands-on access to visual arts, while mural projects like the Ely Mural Initiative beautify our community and celebrate shared identity through public art.

Zach Baltich performs on his vibraphone during the Northern Lakes Concert Series, captivating the audience with his musical artistry.

The Impact of Artistic Recognition

Recognizing and celebrating artistic achievements has a profound impact on both artists and the broader community. For creators, it provides validation and momentum. For the community, it fosters pride, builds cultural capital, and strengthens civic engagement.

At NLAA, we’ve seen firsthand how acknowledgment can shape an artist’s journey. Our programs are designed to encourage emerging artists, spotlight their contributions, and help them move toward greater opportunities.

Recognition in the arts isn’t only about awards—it’s about being seen, heard, and supported. When communities celebrate their artists, they nurture a culture where creativity thrives and innovation takes root.

How NLAA Celebrates Achievements in the Arts Community

NLAA has built a range of programs and traditions that uplift artistic achievement and support community participation in the arts:

  • Creative Spirit of the North Award: An annual recognition honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to the arts and to the creative life of the Ely area.

  • Stars of the North Broadway Workshop: A summer intensive where young artists train with Broadway professionals, culminating in public performances that spotlight rising talent.

  • Youth Theater Camp: A beloved summer program offering children and teens hands-on theater education and the chance to perform on stage.

  • Youth Art Fund Scholarships: Financial support for youth participating in camps and workshops, ensuring that no one is left out due to cost.

  • ArtisticELY and Community Murals: Collaborative public art experiences that beautify Ely and create new spaces for creative expression.

Through these and other initiatives, NLAA promotes artistic excellence while ensuring the arts remain accessible and inclusive.

Middle school students from ISD 696 and local artist Dafne Caruso created a vibrant mural showcasing an outdoor scene with camping tents, a flowing river, and various activities like cycling and kayaking.

The Role of Education in Celebrating Arts Achievements

Arts education is a cornerstone of NLAA’s mission. We believe that when young people are given access to the tools of expression—music, movement, storytelling, and visual arts—they gain the confidence and curiosity to shape their own futures.

That’s why NLAA’s Youth Art Experiences focus on more than just performance or product. We cultivate the creative process, foster teamwork, and invite students to take pride in their growth. Performances and exhibitions give them tangible recognition for their efforts and show our whole community what’s possible with encouragement and support.

By partnering with local schools and educators, NLAA strengthens the connection between arts education and long-term community enrichment.

Supporting Local Artists: A Call to Action

A thriving arts community depends on shared investment. Here are some ways you can support the artists and initiatives that shape our region:

  • Attend Events: Support local performers, students, and creators by showing up for their work.

  • Become a Member or Sponsor: Join NLAA as a sustaining member or sponsor a production, program, or scholarship.

  • Volunteer Your Time: Help us build sets, hang exhibitions, usher performances, or run events.

  • Purchase Local Art: Whether at a gallery, pop-up, or exhibition, buying local supports artists directly.

  • Spread the Word: Use your voice and platforms to elevate awareness about NLAA programs and Northeast Minnesota artists.

Your support ensures that the arts remain a vital and visible part of our region.

At Northern Lakes Arts Association, we are committed to lifting up the artists who bring our communities to life—on stage, on canvas, and in the hearts of all who witness their work.

Because in Northeast Minnesota, the arts aren’t just part of the landscape—they are the landscape. And we’re proud to celebrate that, every single day.

Embracing the Future of Arts Achievements

As NLAA prepares to celebrate its 40th Anniversary in 2026, we look to the future with excitement and purpose. Our yearlong celebration will include special events, community collaborations, and expanded opportunities to showcase the extraordinary artistic talent across our region.

Together—with our audiences, artists, supporters, and community partners—we’ll ensure that Ely continues to be a home for creativity and a stage for stories that matter.

At Northern Lakes Arts Association, we believe that recognizing artistic achievement isn’t just about honoring the past. It’s how we build the future.

Remember: A thriving arts community benefits everyone, so let us all play our part in making sure that our local artists are celebrated for their achievements!
