Reflections in Motion: The Transformative Power of Dance with NLAA

At the Northern Lakes Arts Association (NLAA), we believe that the arts aren’t just something we do—they're how we connect, grow, and heal. Reflections Dance Company, one of our core programs, is a living expression of this belief.

Rooted in Ely and serving communities across Northeast Minnesota, Reflections brings together dancers of all ages and abilities in an inclusive, uplifting environment. It’s more than a dance program—it’s a movement, in every sense of the word. Whether you're a preschooler finding rhythm for the first time, a high schooler training in contemporary or hip-hop, or an adult reconnecting with your body through tap or jazz—Reflections offers a joyful, grounded, and powerful space for personal and communal transformation.

Dance Builds Stronger Bodies—at Every Age

Dance is one of the few physical activities that’s truly lifelong. At Reflections, our youngest dancers begin as early as age three in creative movement classes designed to nurture motor skills, musicality, and imaginative play. As students progress, they are introduced to foundational techniques in ballet, jazz, tap, and modern dance—all while learning about body alignment, discipline, and expressive movement.

The physical benefits are well-documented. Dance improves cardiovascular health, muscular strength, flexibility, coordination, and balance. For older adults, these benefits are especially critical. Dance helps reduce the risk of falls, increases joint mobility, and supports neurological health.

A 2022 study published in Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience found that older adults who participated in weekly dance classes reported improvements not only in balance and gait but in cognitive function and emotional resilience. At Reflections, our intergenerational offerings and adult classes provide an approachable, energizing way for older participants to stay active while feeling connected.

At NLAA, we welcome every body. Reflections offers classes for all ages and skill levels, so you can explore movement at your own pace and comfort.

Emotional and Mental Wellness

For young people navigating stress, identity, and personal growth, dance offers a sanctuary. Through consistent weekly classes, our students find stability, confidence, and community. Reflections doesn’t just teach technique—it builds trust. Our teaching artists encourage self-expression, celebrate progress, and model vulnerability, creating a space where young dancers can bring their full selves into the studio.

Movement is deeply tied to emotional release. For many of our dancers, class is a space to process the day—to sweat through frustration, to breathe into sadness, and to laugh together. Dance becomes a coping strategy, a grounding ritual, and a creative outlet all at once.

Mental health statistics for rural youth continue to raise concern, especially in areas with limited access to professional counseling. In this context, the role of programs like Reflections becomes even more vital. By offering consistent, accessible arts programming in a supportive environment, NLAA contributes to the mental health and emotional well-being of young people across the region.

Dance as a Tool for Social Engagement

At Reflections, we see firsthand how dance strengthens not only individual well-being, but the social fabric of our community. Our classes are intentionally welcoming and multigenerational. Parents often participate in adult classes, siblings dance side-by-side in community showcases, and volunteers of all ages help with costumes, stage sets, and production nights.

This community-centered model fosters deep interconnection. When students grow up in the program, return to teach, or bring their own children into classes, we witness a legacy of movement that spans generations.

From our Spring Showcase to our collaborative summer productions like Water 2.0, these shared experiences bring families and neighbors together in celebration. In a time where rural communities are often isolated or under-resourced, the arts give us a reason—and a rhythm—to come together.

Cultural Exploration Through Movement

One of the most powerful aspects of dance is how it connects us to culture and heritage. Through movement, we carry stories. At Reflections, we honor this by introducing students to dance styles from around the world—encouraging curiosity, respect, and awareness.

Whether exploring the rhythm of West African drumming, the precise footwork of classical ballet, or the cultural storytelling of Indigenous dance forms, students at Reflections begin to understand the global language of dance and the people behind it.

We also make space for dancers to share their own cultural identities through performance and expression. In a rural community where access to diverse cultural experiences may be limited, this becomes a meaningful way to build empathy, appreciation, and connection.

Want to Move With Us?

If you’re wondering how to get involved with Reflections Dance Company or support NLAA’s mission of bringing high-quality, accessible arts experiences to rural Minnesota, here’s how you can take the next step:

  • Join a Class: Visit northernlakesarts.org/reflections-dance-company to view current offerings for all ages and levels. Scholarships are available—we never let finances be a barrier to participation.

  • See a Show: Our Spring and Fall Showcases, along with our summer productions, are community highlights. Mark your calendars and come celebrate the magic of movement.

  • Volunteer or Donate: Help us build costumes, organize events, or sponsor a student dancer. Your support keeps the studio lights on and the rhythm alive.

  • Spread the Word: Tell a friend, post about us on social media, or bring a loved one to class. Word-of-mouth is how we grow.

  • Teach or Collaborate: Are you a dancer or choreographer? Let’s connect! We’re always seeking new instructors and artistic partners to help us evolve.

Embrace the Joy of Dance

Dance has always been more than steps on a stage. At Reflections Dance Company, it’s how we build confidence, tell stories, and create connection in the heart of Northern Minnesota. Whether you're dancing with us now or have never stepped foot in a studio, there is a place for you here.

So come as you are. Take a class. Applaud a young dancer. Move your body. Open your heart. And together, let’s reflect a stronger, healthier, more joyful community—one step at a time.
