About the event
Now on view through June 30, 2025 at the Ely Area Community Hub, Refugia is a powerful solo exhibition by Minnesota fiber artist Kristen Anderson, featuring large-scale felt tapestries inspired by wetland ecosystems and cognitive resilience.
Using Norwegian and locally-sourced wool, Anderson transforms natural fibers through the ancient technique of wet-felting, creating layered, tactile works that mirror the rich biodiversity of Minnesota’s seasonal ponds—also known as vernal pools.
Refugia reflects Anderson’s deep relationship with the northern boreal forest region, her background in biology and art, and her collaborations with an aquatic research ecologist and writers Loree Miltich and Susan Hawkinson, who contributed a poetic companion piece to the series.
The exhibition explores themes of memory, ecological diversity, and emotional healing through art. Viewers are invited to witness, reflect, and connect with both nature and the personal stories interwoven into the fibers of each tapestry.
