Northern Lakes Arts Association will select three artists for A Changing Landscape, our 2027 Visual Arts Season at the Ely Area Community Hub in Ely, Minnesota.

Each selected artist will receive a three-month solo exhibition, a three-day Community Artist Weekend in Ely, and a $500 artist stipend. There is no application fee.

​

During their Community Artist Weekend, each artist will share their practice beyond the gallery by teaching one public art class or workshop and creating one additional opportunity for community engagement. That second activity is artist-led and could take the form of a demonstration, conversation, collaborative project, outdoor experience, artist talk, or another idea connected to their work.

The goal is simple: give the Ely community an opportunity to experience not only an artist's finished work, but the ideas, processes, and perspectives behind it.

A Changing Landscape

A Changing Landscape asks artists to consider our relationship with a natural world that is constantly changing.

​

We welcome many interpretations. Your work might explore landscape, ecology, climate, fire, water, extraction, regrowth, biomimicry, adaptation, human intervention, memory, place, or something we have not considered.

​

We are interested in the question, not one particular answer.

​

Artists at all stages of their careers are encouraged to apply. Local, regional, and visiting artists are welcome.

Gallery Requirements

The Ely Area Community Hub is primarily a wall-based exhibition space. Proposed artwork must be suitable for safe display on gallery walls, and no individual artwork may weigh more than 75 pounds.

​

You do not need to have a completed exhibition to apply. Your five work samples should help us understand your artistic practice and the direction of the exhibition you would like to present. The samples do not need to be the exact works you would exhibit if selected.

​

Travel + Transportation

Selected artists are responsible for transporting or shipping their artwork to and from Ely and for their own travel to and from Ely for the Community Artist Weekend.
